The shooting incident began in Bridgeport around 5:10 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 4, and ended in New Haven County in Ansonia with the death of the unnamed suspect.
According to Capt. Kevin Gilleran of the Bridgeport Police, officers were conducting a criminal investigation into weapons and narcotics violations in the area of Oak Street in Bridgeport when they attempted a motor vehicle stop.
The driver of the vehicle fled from officers traveling northbound on Route 8 and continued through several municipalities before stopping on the 200 block of Division Street in Ansonia, where an officer-involved shooting occurred, Gilleran said.
The suspect was transported to Griffin Hospital in Derby where he was pronounced dead, Gilleran said.
The shooting is being investigated by the Connecticut Office of Inspector General, the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad, and the Ansonia/Milford Judicial District State’s Attorney’s Office.
Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter Sr. said he "has the utmost confidence that the Office of the Inspector General will ensure a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation."
"Regardless of the circumstances, loss of life is tragic," Porter said. "Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of the deceased."
As is department protocol, the Bridgeport police officers involved in the encounter will be assigned out of the Chief’s Office on modified duty until a determination has been made by the Inspector General Office.
